Inspect attic
Why it matters
An improperly ventilated or under-insulated attic drives up energy bills and can cause ice dams in cold climates. It's also where roof leaks show up first — brown water stains on decking or rafters mean you have a leak that hasn't reached the ceiling yet.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
Use a flashlight and step only on joists or a plywood walkway — never between joists.
- 2
Check insulation depth — it should be at least 10-14 inches of fiberglass or equivalent.
- 3
Look for brown water stains on roof decking or rafters (signs of a roof leak).
- 4
Verify soffit vents are not blocked by insulation — baffles should keep them clear.
- 5
Look for daylight coming through the roof (indicates missing or damaged shingles).
- 6
Check for pest signs: droppings, nesting material, chewed wiring.
- 7
In winter, look for frost on the underside of the roof deck (a sign of poor ventilation).
