Backwash sand filter
Why it matters
Restricted water flow causes the pump to strain and fail; dead pump leads to no circulation, cloudy water, and algae blooms within 24 hours.
Stop forgetting to do this.
Hearth generates a personalized maintenance schedule so you never miss another backwash sand filter.
How to do it
- 1
Check filter pressure gauge reading; note baseline (usually 8–15 psi).
- 2
Turn off pump; turn multiport valve handle to Backwash position.
- 3
Turn pump back on; water will reverse through filter to waste line.
- 4
Run for 3–5 minutes until discharge water runs clear, not cloudy.
- 5
Turn off pump; switch valve to Rinse; run for 1 minute to settle sand.
- 6
Switch valve to Filter position and restart pump.
