Have chimney swept and inspected — wood burning

Difficulty: call_a_proTime: 90 minsEst. Cost: $150 - $350

Why it matters

Creosote — a flammable byproduct of wood burning — builds up inside the flue. A 1/8" buildup is enough to cause a chimney fire, which can reach 2,000°F and spread to the structure. Annual sweeping removes it.

Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it

  • 1

Book a CSIA-certified chimney sweep in late summer or early fall (before chimney fire season).

  • 2

The sweep will clean creosote from the flue and perform a Level 1 inspection.

  • 3

Ask about the condition of the flue liner, damper, and firebox.

  • 4

Do not use the fireplace until any repairs are made.
