Why it matters

A discharged or expired extinguisher will fail exactly when you need it. Extinguishers should be inspected annually and professionally serviced every 6 years.

How to do it

    Check the pressure gauge — needle should be in the green zone.

    Inspect the pin and tamper seal are intact.

    Look for dents, corrosion, or nozzle blockage.

    Check the label for the last service date.

    Note: most disposable home extinguishers should be replaced at 12 years.
