How to do it
- 1
Prepare a flashlight, work gloves, and a small shovel or trowel; wear a dust mask if mold is visible.
- 2
Enter the crawlspace safely; note the location and count of flood vents (typically 1 per 150 sq ft of crawlspace).
- 3
Inspect each vent from inside; clear any debris, spider webs, or mud blocking the opening.
- 4
If vents are buried under sediment, carefully excavate to expose the vent opening (call a pro if sediment layer is >6 inches).
- 5
Check the opposite vent side (outside of foundation) for vegetation or debris; trim if necessary.
- 6
Document vent locations with photos; note any damage to vent frames or screens.
