How to do it
- 1
Walk the exterior foundation line — look for cracks, bulging, or horizontal displacement.
- 2
Check the interior basement walls for cracks, white mineral deposits (efflorescence), or moisture.
- 3
Mark any existing cracks with a pencil and date — monitor for growth.
- 4
Horizontal cracks or any crack wider than 1/4" warrant a structural engineer inspection.
