Change generator oil and spark plugs
Why it matters
Old oil breaks down and doesn't protect the engine during hard use (extended outage). Old spark plugs cause hard starting. Annual maintenance is cheap insurance for a $500–3,000 investment.

How to do it

Run the generator briefly to warm the oil.

Remove the drain plug and drain into a container.
- 3
Replace with fresh oil to the full mark (check the manual for type and quantity).

Remove and replace the spark plug with the correct gap.
- 5
Change the air filter if visibly dirty.
