Why it matters

GFCI outlets protect against electrocution near water — in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoors. They can trip internally and appear functional while providing zero protection.

How to do it

    Plug a small lamp into the outlet.

  • 2

    Press the TEST button — the lamp should go off.

  • 3

    Press RESET — the lamp should come back on.

  • 4

    If the lamp doesn't go off when you press TEST, the outlet needs replacement.

  • 5

    Test every GFCI outlet in the home.
