Check & Tighten Grab Bars (Aging-in-Place)
Why it matters
Loose grab bars cause falls that result in serious injury or death, especially for older adults. A grab bar pulled from a wall under body weight can cause falls from standing or tub entry, leading to fractures or head trauma (hospital costs $10,000+). Annual tightening ensures fall prevention.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
Locate all installed grab bars (typically in bathrooms at toilet, tub, and shower entry; bedrooms near bed).
- 2
Grasp each bar firmly and attempt to wiggle it side-to-side and up-and-down; bars should not flex or move.
- 3
If a bar wobbles, tighten the fasteners (usually lag bolts or hex screws per the installation manual).
- 4
Use the correct wrench or hex key; do not over-tighten (can strip threads or bend the bar).
- 5
Check that hollow-wall anchors (if used) are rated for 250+ lbs load; if bent or damaged, replace with new anchors.
- 6
Test each bar again after tightening; confirm no movement before relying on it.
