Clogged gutters cause water to overflow and saturate the soil next to your foundation — the leading cause of basement water infiltration. They also cause wood rot at fascia boards and ice dams in cold climates.

How to do it

Use a ladder and gloves to scoop debris from gutters into a bucket.

Work toward the downspout.

Flush with a garden hose — water should flow freely from the downspout.

If downspout is blocked, use a plumber's snake or hose with a nozzle attachment.
- 5
Check that downspouts discharge at least 6 feet from the foundation.
