Inspect attached-garage firewall & self-closing door
Why it matters
IRC requires 5/8-inch Type X drywall and a 20-minute self-closing door. This is the only barrier between a car fire and the house.
Stop forgetting to do this.
Hearth generates a personalized maintenance schedule so you never miss another inspect attached-garage firewall & self-closing door.
How to do it
- 1
Inspect the drywall separating the garage from the house (firewall).
- 2
Verify it is 5/8-inch Type X (fire-rated) drywall, not standard 1/2-inch.
- 3
Check the door between garage and house for automatic self-closing.
- 4
Open the door and release it; it must close completely on its own.
- 5
Inspect the door seals and weatherstripping for gaps or damage.
- 6
Look for unsealed penetrations (pipes, wires) through the firewall.
