Inspect & Insulate Knee Walls (Cape & 1.5-Story Homes)
Why it matters
Uninsulated or poorly insulated knee walls (short partition walls between attic and living space) account for 15–25% of heating loss in Cape-style and 1.5-story homes, costing $300–600/year in wasted energy. Addressing knee walls is the second-highest ROI energy improvement after attic air sealing.

How to do it
- 1
Locate knee walls on the upper floor (typically in closets or bedrooms on the roof line).
- 2
From the attic side, inspect the back of the knee wall for existing insulation depth.
- 3
Measure R-value (target R-13 minimum, R-19 preferred); if missing or <R-13, plan insulation upgrade.
- 4
Check that soffit vents are clear of insulation (insulation should not block airflow).
- 5
Inspect top and bottom of knee wall for air gaps (caulk or foam-seal if found).
- 6
Solicit quotes for blown-in cellulose or fiberglass insulation ($400–800 per wall, 2–3 walls typical per cape home).
