How to do it
- 1
Enter the basement or crawlspace with a flashlight and ice pick or awl.
- 2
Walk the entire rim joist perimeter, looking for visible gaps, cracks, or missing sections.
- 3
Poke the rim joist wood with an awl or screwdriver every 3 feet; soft spots indicate rot.
- 4
Look for termite mud tubes (brown pencil-sized lines) running vertically on rim joist or foundation.
- 5
Inspect for rust stains or wet patches (signs of water intrusion); water-stained wood should be investigated by a contractor.
- 6
Seal large gaps (>½ inch) with spray foam; seal cracks with caulk. Add insulation (R-13 batt) if missing.
