Radon retest (post-mitigation)
Why it matters
The EPA recommends retesting every 2 years to confirm mitigation system performance. A failed mitigation fan leads to radon re-accumulation, a colorless, odorless radioactive gas linked to lung cancer.
Stop forgetting to do this.
Hearth generates a personalized maintenance schedule so you never miss another radon retest (post-mitigation).
How to do it
- 1
Verify that the radon mitigation system has been running continuously for at least 24 hours.
- 2
Check the system fan motor and ductwork for obvious damage or disconnections.
- 3
Order a radon test kit from a certified radon testing laboratory or EPA-approved provider.
- 4
Place the test kit in the lowest habitable room (basement), away from drafts and exterior walls.
- 5
Leave the test kit undisturbed for the required measurement period (typically 48 hours).
- 6
Mail the sealed test kit to the lab and wait for results (usually within 1–2 weeks).
- 7
Review results; levels should be below 2 pCi/L (EPA action level); if higher, contact mitigation contractor.
