Remove snow and icicles from roof edge
Why it matters
Heavy snow buildup causes roof collapses, and large icicles are incredibly dangerous if they fall. Leaving snow on the eaves also promotes ice dams, which force water up under your shingles and into your walls.

How to do it
- 1
Stay on the ground — never put a ladder on snow or ice.
- 2
Use a telescoping aluminum or fiberglass roof rake (do not use a metal-edged tool on shingles).
- 3
Pull snow down from the lower 3–4 ft of roof edge, working in 2-ft sections.
- 4
Knock icicles down carefully from a distance; never stand directly beneath them.
- 5
Repeat after any storm that drops more than 6 inches, especially if you've seen ice damming before.
