Clean and inspect skylights

Skylight seals degrade over years of UV exposure and thermal cycling. A small leak around the flashing causes water damage in the ceiling and attic that homeowners often blame on the roof.

How to do it

Clean the glass with a squeegee and streak-free glass cleaner from the outside.

Inspect the flashing around the perimeter — look for gaps, rust, or lifted edges.

Check the interior frame for water stains or condensation between panes (fogged panes indicate failed insulated glass — note for replacement).

Clear any leaves or debris from the weep channels in the frame.

If you find gaps or signs of leaking, do NOT caulk the flashing yourself — Velux and Fakro warranties void if DIY sealant is applied. Call a qualified roofer.
