Squirrel & Raccoon Attic Inspection (Pre-Denning)
Why it matters
Pregnant raccoons and squirrels den in attics in winter; exclusion after kit birth ($800–2000 removal + cleanup) is far more complex and stressful than prevention. Early winter exclusion also prevents extensive insulation damage and noise disturbances.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
In November, conduct a detailed exterior attic perimeter inspection using binoculars and a headlamp.
- 2
Identify all gaps >½ inch in soffit vents, vent pipes, fascia seams, rake trim, and soffit edges.
- 3
Seal small gaps (<1 inch) with expanding foam and caulk; larger gaps require hardware cloth or steel mesh.
- 4
Cover soffit vents with ¼-inch mesh; do not block airflow needed for attic ventilation.
- 5
In December, deploy live traps (Havahart brand, ~$30 each) near suspicious entry points if droppings or gnaw marks appear.
- 6
Check traps daily; humanely relocate captured animals per local wildlife regulations. Seal final entry holes after 2 weeks trap-free.
