Test AC condensate float switch / safety cutoff
Why it matters
A clogged condensate drain line can cause water to back up into the pan, triggering ceiling collapse and major water damage. The float switch is the only thing preventing this overflow; a failed float switch silently stops working and offers zero protection.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
Locate your AC condensate pan and float switch in the attic or mechanical closet.
- 2
Carefully pour water into the pan, watching the float rise as water level increases.
- 3
When the float reaches its trip point, the AC unit should shut off automatically.
- 4
If the unit does not shut off, the float switch has failed and needs replacement.
- 5
Call an HVAC technician to replace the failed switch and verify drainage is clear.
