Test & Drain Basement Dehumidifier
Why it matters
Dehumidifier drain hoses kink, ice formation blocks cooling coils (especially in air-conditioned basements), and pump failures are silent—leading to 72+ RH, mold growth, and $800–2000+ remediation. Regular testing prevents catastrophic moisture events.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
Set basement temperature to 65°F or lower (encourage the dehumidifier to run actively).
- 2
Turn on the dehumidifier and allow it to run for 10 minutes; listen for the compressor cycling.
- 3
Check the drain hose output; it should be cool and flowing water steadily (if connected to a pump, confirm pump is running).
- 4
Inspect the drain hose end-to-end for kinks, cracks, or visible blockages; straighten as needed.
- 5
Look at the cooling coil (inside the front intake area); if heavily frosted or ice-covered, shut down and let it thaw for 30 min.
- 6
Clean or replace the intake filter if visibly dusty (most models have a washable filter, no cost).
