Test Boiler Pressure Relief Valve
Why it matters
A failed pressure relief valve causes pressure to build, rupturing the boiler tank or piping and creating a steam explosion. This can cause severe burns, structural damage, and death.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
Turn off the boiler and allow it to cool for 30 minutes (relief valve is safer to test when cool).
- 2
Locate the relief valve—typically a lever on top or side of the boiler, labeled 'T&P Relief' (temperature & pressure).
- 3
Place a bucket or towel under the outlet to catch discharge water.
- 4
Gently lift the lever and hold for 1–2 seconds; listen for a hissing sound and watch for hot water discharge.
- 5
Release the lever; it should snap back into place and discharge should stop immediately.
- 6
If no discharge occurs or the lever is stuck, turn off the boiler, call a plumber, and do not operate the boiler until serviced.
