Wood stove annual inspection (gaskets, baffle, firebrick)
Why it matters
EPA wood stoves rely on a tight seal to control burn rate and efficiency. A deteriorated gasket allows uncontrolled combustion, overheating, and cracked firebrick. Firebrick replacement costs $300–$600.
Stop forgetting to do this.

How to do it
- 1
Allow the wood stove to cool completely if recently used.
- 2
Open the stove door and inspect the woven rope gasket around the door edge.
- 3
Squeeze the gasket gently — it should feel flexible and rebound, not crumble.
- 4
If gasket is hard or crumbling, order a replacement kit and press new rope into the groove with high-temp adhesive.
- 5
Look inside at the baffle (horizontal shelf that directs heat) for cracks or heavy corrosion.
- 6
Inspect the firebrick lining for cracks, missing pieces, or spalling; note any damage.
- 7
If baffle or firebrick is damaged, contact a wood-stove service technician for professional repair.
